White Horse Road Race Series (Race 3)

A new world record was set in the third White Horse 5K road race at Sandhurst.

Neath Harrier Martin Rees was the man of the moment, running 15 minutes, 31 seconds to break his own Vet 55 world record by eight seconds and finish sixth overall.
"The course is fast, the atmosphere friendly and the competition good. I knew it was the place for a record attempt" he said.

Simon Jones, from London club Belgrave, repeated his July 2007 victory, going to the front once the field had settled down and establishing a winning lead.

The chasing group including Rees never threatened, with Gloucester Cross-Country League champion Julian Emery (Clevedon) taking second after getting away from brothers Mark and Lewis Hobbs of Swansea in the last 800 metres.

Hosts Severn AC won the team prize from a strong Swansea outfit, adding to their surprise June team victory.
National Vet 40 5000m champion Gary Hope led Severn home, starting slowly but moving into the top 15 at one mile. He improved to 10th, winning the Over-40 award.

Simon Fortnam (13th) ran his best time of the year, having to fend off the late charge of team-mate Dave Gilbert (14th), who ran a personal best.

Next home for Severn was 17-year-old Gareth Howells in 17th in 16.36, with veterans Dave Lander (18th) and Alex Hope (20th) completing the victorious Severn team.

Alex Maton, 18, improved by 32 seconds when 33rd to take the Under-20 prize.

Wendy Nicholls (Cirencester AC) dominated the ladies' race, beating many top class men in finishing 16th but disappointed to finish a second outside her best and five seconds outside the course record.
