White Horse 5k Road Race Series (Race 2)
It was back to winning ways for triathlete Garry Hughes and Severn AC in the second White Horse 5k road race at Sandhurst.
Hughes, in his second race after 13 months injury, surprised himself and the field by immediately opening up a lead.
At one mile he was five seconds clear of Jeremy Bradley (Cheltenham). Hughes, 23, a former Midland under 17 cross country champion, beat his previous best by half a minute.
Bradley concentrated on keeping second but had to run hard as a large chasing group closed on him. He held on by two seconds with Harvey Speed (Coventry) third.
Tucked into this large group were Severn AC's leading runners. National Masters 10000m champion Gary Hope ran his best 5k for three seasons to win the veteran over 40 award. He was sixth, holding off fast finishing Peter Stephens who broke 16 minutes for the first time this year.
The pair headed Severn's first 5k team victory since 2005. Team vice captain Simon Fortnam(15th) just beat his captain Alex Hope (16th) who took second veteran's prize.
Running his best ever White Horse, Andy Hawkins (18th) was fifth scorer. The team was completed by Dave Gilbert (21st) returning after injury.
Wendy Nicholls (Cirencester) was a class apart in the ladies race setting a new record for 16.29 for the course.
