Whitsun 5 mile Road Race

Peter Stephens of Severn Athletic Club continued his run of second places in local road races. His latest came in the White Horse Whitsun Five Mile Road Race.

"I was going to make my debut in a Half Marathon at Dymock, but was persuaded to postpone my Half debut to the autumn and concentrate on the speedier shorter races," he said.

The surprise winner was Patrick Kavanagh (Tipton Harriers). The 34-year-old was making a comeback after a few years away. He shot into a 40-metre lead which he maintained.

Stephens tracked him running with Adrian Williams (Cirencester), who he has been having several tussles with recently.

It was Stephens' devastating finish which claimed him his fifth second place of 2008. Before turning to distance running, he was an 11.8 seconds 100 metres performer.

Further down the field, Dave Gresswell (Gloucester) won the veterans over 40 title for the first time with Caroline Cotterell (Stroud) winning her first open ladies race.
