Gareth Howells of Severn AC became the youngest winner of a Lloyds TSB Four Mile Fitness Run from the Pilot Inn.Aged 17 years and one month, Howells had his first race on March 1 when second in the Grocery Two Miles at Sandhurst.
Since then he has made rapid progress in Severn's distance group, guided by Rob Cytlau, gaining selection for the club's area and national 12-stage road relay teams.
Forest of Dean Under-15 Kieron Hale ran aggressively, with Sir Thomas Rich's pupil Will New in close attendance.
With halfway reached in 11 minutes, 45 seconds, the pair were in a six-strong group that included 2007 double winner Dave Durden (Dursley).
Howells was adrift in seventh place, but over the next mile picked up the pace. Hale never gave up, but Howells' finish was the faster.
