New Years Day 5 Report

01/01/2008
Peter Stephens of Severn AC regained the Pilot Inn New Year's Day Five Mile title.

After winning in 2006, he was second behind Andy Prophett of Cheltenham in 2007.

"On Christmas Eve I badly sprained my ankle training and had to hobble three miles home," said Stephens.

After icing the swelling went down and, with his ankle strapped, Stephens decided to race.

Two Cheltenham youngsters, Luke Carroll and Andrew Kaighian made sure Stephens did not have an easy time.

At halfway Kaighian was falling back, but 15-year-old Carroll matched Stephens' pace.

The decisive break came going down Elmore Hill, where Stephens broke away and never allowed the youngster to challenge again.

The gallant Carroll ran on well, taking 57 seconds off Ben Coldray's age group record.

Dominic Malsom (Gloucester AC) moved through in the second half of the race to record his first ever open race top three placing.

Severn maintained their 100 percent team record in this race, as Andy Hawkins ran a course PB and Tom Meheran won the Over-50 award, pipping club-mate Bill Griffiths
