National 12 stage road relays.

Severn AC men's team put in a good performance when finishing 52nd in the National 12 stage road relay championships in Sutton Park on Saturday.

In overcast and breezy conditions the race was run over 12 alternating legs of 5.4 miles and three miles. Simon Fortnam ran a solid first leg bringing the team home in 56th place in 30.38, a seven second improvement on his Midlands relay long leg time. Dave Lander gained a place on leg two with 16.51, the teams fastest short leg of the day. Andy Hawkins (32.21) maintained that position on leg three as did John Holland (18.24) on leg four. Holland's time was a 12 second improvement on his Midlands relay leg and it came only two weeks after his personal best at the London Marathon. Stewart Lynas (32.42) gained a place to 54th on leg five and Les Davis (19.18) held that position on leg six. Peter Stephens (30.47) took the team up to 53rd on leg seven and Mark Rawlings ran a fine 18.11 on his 12 stage debut to take the team into 51st. This position was held by 17 year old Alex Maton (34.14) who ran a long leg for the first time at Sutton Park. On leg ten, Austin Degge, who was called into the team at short notice ran a brave 21.40 dropping two places. Austin Blackburn (33.47) kept the team in 53rd before 17 year old Gareth Howells (18.11) gained a position on the final leg to finish in 52nd.
