Pilot Inn new years day 5 mile road race
Phil Parry of Bristol achieved a ten year ambition of winning a Gloucester area road race when he sealed victory at the Pilot Inn New Years Day 5 Mile Road Race.
After a series of second and thirds, including a second in 2009, Parry went straight into the lead and was never challenged. After he said; "I was carefull on a couple of icy stretches but otherwise just kept looking straight forward and concentrating on keeping my lead."
Such was Parry's pace, by the halfway mark the pursuing group was down to just Kyran Hale, Severn AC's talented 14 year old, and Nathan Jones of CLC Striders. From here Hale ran aggressively and managed to open up a gap over Jones that he successfully defended to the finish. This run smashed the Under 15 record on the course by over two minutes and his own pb by 56 seconds.
Next home for Severn was 16 year old Oliver Starkey. He felt he paid the price for staying with the chasing pack early on. After falling back however, he rallied to break 30 minutes for the first time in sixth position.
The Severn AC youngsters spearheaded the Severn fight against the emerging CLC striders team. Austin Blackburn ran through the field after a cautious start to finish in 17th, with team mate John Holland following through in 18th. Ian Overthrow continued his comeback to be fifth scorer in 20th position, with the victorious team anchored by Derek Lightstone in 25th.
Dave Blackburn repeated his Boxing Day victory, being first V65 home.
Liza Barry of CLC was untroubled in winning the ladies race. Her team mate Rachel Vines had to work hard to hold on to second, after persistent challenges from U/20 winner Rachel Underhill of Severn who secured 3rd overall in her first 5 mile race.
