Midlands men's 6 stage road relays
Severn AC's men's team put in a solid performance in the Midlands six stage road relays at Sutton Park by finishing 17th and securing a place in next month's national road relays.
Gary Hope got the team off to a good start on the competitive first leg. The England veteran international covered the 6km lap in 18.52 finishing in 19th place. Josh Lilly tore through the field on the second leg with a very fast time of 17.45. That was one of the quickest laps of the day and elevated the team to fourth place overall. Alex Hope ran a solid 20.32 on leg three dropping five places to 14th. Simon Fortnam ran 20.48 to hand over in 14th but still comfortably in the qualifying positions. James Rose, making his six stage debut, ran 20.39 to pass onto Dave Lander on the final leg in 16th. The experienced Lander ran 20.42 to bring the team home in 17th in a time of 1:59.22 and booked their place in the National six stage road relays.
Severn had three runners in the B team. Oliver Starkey ran 22.19 for 69th place, Steve Hale gained one position on his return from injury (22.28) to 68th and new signing Andy Norman maintained that position on the third leg with 23.25.
After the race, team spokesman Simon Fortnam said "That was a solid team performance and an excellent leg from Josh Lilly helped us qualify for the nationals. Hopefully we will have a full strength team with Tim Dalton available again and we can finish in the top 50."
