White Horse 5k series - race three
TIM DALTON led his resurgent Severn Athletics Club team-mates to their first team victory in the White Horse 5km road race since last year.
It was Dalton's first major road race win in two years.
Running on the fast Sandhurst course, Dalton was uncertain of his stamina after recovering from a spring stress fracture.
Cheltenham runners Dave Roper and Peter Holmes set the pace and Dalton said: "It was as fast as I wanted with my doubts about current fitness. "I tucked in then with a mile left took the lead."
Dalton's speed proved too much for Roper, particularly in the last 200 metres, when the Severn runner stretched his lead to 13 seconds.
Dalton's 14 minutes 59 seconds was a course personal best and the first sub 15 minutes in 2009.
His aim now is to regain his county 5k title on August 20 and perhaps break Dan Robinson's 14.27 course record.
Kyran Hale surprised his older team-mates by leading them home and making the top 10 for the first time.
The 14-year-old avoided the impetuous start which spoilt his first 5k two months ago and his more conservative pace set a new under-15 record of 16.48, beating his personal best by 11 seconds.
Severn's Simon Fortnam (14th) ducked under 17 minutes for the first time this season and Dave Gilbert (15th) pipped Dave Lander (16th), who won the over 40 award.
Severn's team was closed by Dave Lowthian (27th) and the good night was completed by Dave Buckle who won his second over 60 prize in a week.
