Pilot Inn 10 mile road race

Experience proved decisive in the County 10 mile road race championship at the Pilot Inn.

In the men's race, Nathan Jones (CLC) and Rod Jones (Westbury) set the pace followed by James Rose (Severn) and Dave Gresswell (Gloucester).

Just before three miles multiple county champion Walmsley moved ahead. He lengthened his lead all the way to the finish and won by half a mile.

Champion many times in the 1990's it was his first win over the Pilot course.

Host club Severn were delighted with the performance of second placed James Rose. He showed excellent pace judgement and moved up from fifth between seven and nine miles.

Rose led his Severn team to a two point win from Westbury Harriers. Steve Hale (9th) had his best race for a year holding off Dave Lander (10th) who moved up from 25th at three miles.

Ian Smith (13th) won the silver medal in the vet 45s and the team was completed by John Holland (18th) and Steve Bradley (19th).

In the women's race the early fast pace was set by Debbie Marsden (Westbury) followed by Jo Fletcher (Severn) and Steph Lane (Bourton). Marsden dropped out at three miles and Fletcher and Lane started to feel the heat and early pace.

It was the older Fletcher who survived best as 18 year old Lane fell back.

There was an outstanding run in 12th place by Martin Ford (Cheltenham) whose time of 65.10 heads the UK 65 - 69 rankings.
