National 6 stage road relays

TIM DALTON became the first city athlete since the 1960s to make the top 10 in a national distance running event.

He ran the opening 3.75 mile leg in 17.13 and broke Josh Lilly's club record by six seconds.

It was a reprise of the 2007 event, with international Ryan McLeod (Elswick Harriers) setting the pace.
Dalton's effective finish saw him close, as McLeod ran 17.06 and the Severn star grabbed fourth spot.

It was the day's 10th fastest time, with the fastest coming from UK number one Andy Vernon (Aldershot) in 16.49.

The only previous city athlete to achieve a top-10 placing was Gloucester's Mick Price, who was among the UK's best in the halcyon days of British distance running.

Severn's second runner Stephen Hale stayed in fourth place for the three-quarters of a mile, then slipped to 67th of the 79 teams after a lap of 22.09.
